We've known a certain star through various incarnations – on Password, The Mary Tyler Moore Show, The Golden Girls and, in recent years, in such hit movies as The Proposal. And this weekend the incomparable Betty White finally gets a gig that has defined cool for most of our adult lives – hosting Saturday Night Live.
Betty is not ashamed to tell anyone who asks that she is 88 years old and she has managed to charm fans for decades. And as far as we can tell, her face is still close to her own although we certainly would not begrudge her a few nips and tucks along the way.
Proof of her multi-generational appeal is the apparent inspiration for the SNL invite: a Facebook campaign called "Betty White to Host SNL (please)." Started in January, it had almost half a million fans by mid-March, when the show confirmed that she would top the bill this week (Jay-Z will be the musical guest). Betty willl be the oldest person to host the show, which is a nice distinction, but she's also the people's choice. So watch. And clap. And laugh. That's what Betty would want.
