Did Facebook reunion your class reunion? While Facebook can sometimes make planning easier, organizers are finding that some of their classmates skip their reunion because of it. Here are some ways Facebook is ruining class reunions.
Facebook Removes the Curiosity Factor With High School Friends
One reason you go high school reunions is because you're wondering what ever happened to…? With Facebook, you don't need to wonder. In fact, you can easily find friends from high school on Facebook just by searching for your school. Facebook's friend finder even helps you do this.
Once you locate a high school friend, you can then see pictures of them, find out about their life, and get the answer to "I wonder if he ever did marry the prom queen." Once you've spend a few minutes on Facebook, the curiosity factor is gone.
Reconnecting With Special Friends
With Facebook, the joy in reconnecting with a good friend from the past is also taken care of. Before Facebook, you might have spent money to travel to your reunion and find your old high school pals so you could chat with them in person. Now, a few Facebook notes back and forth can be almost as good as being there.
Being Reminded of Those People You Don't Want to See
Most of us get through our high school years with minimal scars, but for some, the remnants of taunting, bullying, or just being made to feel like a dork never really go away. With Facebook, you get to see all those people again who cause you torment in the past. Chances are these people have probably grown up to be good people, and might even be embarrassed about their previous behavior, but even so, others are going to act exactly the same toward you. They might even bring up their teasing as something to laugh about today. Maybe it is, and maybe it's not. Only you know that.
The point is, when you see these unpleasant folks on Facebook, it can be a reminder that you really don't want to see them in person. This thought alone can make you shy away from your reunion.
The High School Cliques Never Go Away
If you felt left out of "the clique" in high school, Facebook will serve as yet another reminder not to go to your reunion. Cliques exist on Facebook just as much as they did in high school. Since you were shut out back then, you might be shut out now simply because they never got a chance to know you. Your high school reunion may be a way to change all that, or it could be another awkward experience. While you might have forgotten about the clique or mean kids in high school, seeing them all hanging out and sharing photos from back then will serve as another reminder not to go to your reunion.
Pictures of Your High School Reunion on Facebook
Even if you skip your high school reunion, you might still feel like you got to go simply by seeing the pictures on Facebook. When other friends comment about things that happened, you'll probably be able to join in because the pictures will show you who was there and what they did.
Facebook Takes Away the Conversation Factor at Reunions
Even if you do go to your high school reunion, you might feel as if all that great "catching up" conversation is gone. You won't need to find out what your high school friend has been up to because you'll already know from Facebook. Once that part of the conversation is taken away, what will you talk about? Facebook might ruin your high school reunion even if you do decide to attend.
