Actress Kathy Bates took to Twitter today to announce she had a double mastectomy. “ Hey All, sorry for the long silence. I was diagnosed with breast cancer 2 months ago & am recovering from a double mastectomy. I don’t miss my breasts as much as I miss Harry’s Law,” she tweeted.
The 64-year-old actress is not the only celebrity who has helped change attitudes towards this once taboo subject. Here’s a look at some celebrities who have very gone public with their bouts with breast cancer and subsequent mastectomies.
Christina Applegate, who has starred in movies and also on television shows, including Married with Children, Samantha Who?, and Up All Night, was People magazine’s cover girl for their 2009 most beautiful people issue shortly after she announced she had bilateral mastectomies. She is a spokesperson for early detection and genetic testing.
