The father of our country was not a biological father. At 27, George Washington (who served as the first president of the United States from 1789 to 1797) married Martha Dandridge Custis Washington – who had two children from her first marriage to plantation owner Daniel Custis. Twenty years her senior, he died of an illness. Two years later she married George Washington, who helped raised her kids. Here the family poses in 1790.
