Ulysses S. Grant, the famous Civil War military commander who served as president from 1869 to 1877, was engaged for four years to Julie Boggs Dent. (The Mexican-American War caused the delay.) When he was 26 and she was 22, they finally got married. His family disapproved of the union because her parents owned slaves. The Grants had three sons and a daughter – who got married at the White House.
