Sandra Day O'Connor, wife of John O'Connor

Sandra Day O’Connor – who in 1981 became the first woman to serve on the U.S. Supreme Court – retired from her post after 25 years, in large part to care for her husband, lawyer John O’Connor, who suffered from Alzheimer’s disease. Three years later, in 2009, John O’Connor died. Here the O’Connors dance together at a 1998 ball in Washington, D.C.
