I’m back on the dating circuit and getting lots of advice. Friends say I need to grow out and straighten my curly hair. I’m 50 and think I’m too old. What do you think?
Little Orphan Annie,
Dear Annie--
Is no one ever satisfied with their appearance? Let's look at this hair issue. From Samson to Rapunzel, Lady Godiva and all those Disney princesses, it's an obsession of the species. In the USA, we spend some $50 billion yearly in salons alone. Add in the endless shampoos, conditioners, volumizers, toners and whatnot, and you're talking real money. But what's it all about? Is it women wanting to look good for themselves, their men or both?
Even the bible says, "if a woman have long hair, it is a glory to her" (widely misquoted as "her crowning glory.") Just look at the commercials for all those hair-care products we buy. Almost invariably, the girls' hair looks like it's been flattened by a sheet-metal press and it's long enough reach her belt. .
