David Brent - The Office

Since news broke that the American version of The Office will end after the 9th season, I couldn't help thinking of the original, which only ran for two seasons and a couple of Christmas episodes and yet has stayed in my memory in part because of the character David Brent.

I loved creepy office manager Brent (played by Ricky Gervais) because wasn't there something about him that we'd all seen in offices we'd worked in? He was outrageous and yet there was some truth to his antics, besides. Brent didn't seem to handle midlife all that well when the series began, but somehow we believe he made the most of it later on. Or maybe he just went on being creepy. Hard to tell.
